sometimes I think about how X was originally going to be the villain in megaman Zero
and how in the X series he fought so hard to keep people from starting crazy dictatorships where they kill all the humans so that maybe someday everyone could live together in peace
and how he kept doing that…
Oh man I know what you mean.
oh my fucking god here we go
but really… this whole scene is friggin’ great, though!
like, X just got chewed out by Sigma for missing that shot, even telling him that he had no reason to because there was a small chance that he would hit the officer captured (which must be REALLY GREAT for his current self esteem) and having the injured officer thank Sigma for cleaning up after X (he doesn’t explicitly say that but YOU CAN KIND OF TELL) and he’s feeling bummed out for disappointing everyone
and then Zero comes in
and he doesn’t even have to say anything
he just has to put his hand on X’s shoulder and the dude’s clearly in a better mood (to the point of BLUSHING WHAT(!!!))
it’s like
he’s silently saying that it’s alright and he did his best and he’s NOT MAD AT HIM EITHER
just kill me right now these two are so perfect okay
sometimes I think about how X was originally going to be the villain in megaman Zero

Oh man I know what you mean. It hurts to know that towards the end of his life X just soft of gave up and stopped caring. Because despite all the terrible things he went through in his life, that’s what X was always about. Hope and dreams and caring about others and hesitating to pull the trigger and all that stuff. And he lost all of that.
One of the things I really liked about the Zero series was how they handled that bit of X’s character. How, instead of going evil, X saw what was happening to himself and stopped it. Seeing what happened to himself and the world must have been hard on him, though, since he seemed so sad throughout the Zero series. He never smiled once. I really missed that about him. He was always so bright and full of emotion throughout the X series, and then it was like his will to continue left when Zero sealed himself away, and responsibility and following routine were the only things keeping X going.
Actually, I think that’s exactly what happened. I think X might have been alright if Zero had stayed with him. Even people who don’t ship those two together acknowledge they had something special. And they did. They were partners. They relied on each other for support throughout their lives, and were in such a way that one couldn’t really function without the other. I know Zero had his reasons for sealing himself, but it has always annoyed me that he still thought X would be okay without him, despite all the times X has needed Zero to protect, support, or fight along side him.
But I guess that’s what would have been so great about the original ending for the Zero series. It would have been Zero still supporting X. By stopping X when he was too far gone to be saved. Because X made Zero promise, way back in X4, that if X ever went maverick, Zero would stop him. Because even though Zero didn’t promise him out loud, you know he still would honor X’s request.

hgfnf no oh my god this is perfect you don’t need to apologize at all
I actually do think it’s more in character for him to stop himself when he had the chance with sealing the Dark elf in his body. He’s smart enough to realize when he’s starting to slip and stops it before it gets out of hand
and him being so sad is actually a big reason I draw him smiling so often hahahfjhsd
but he lost a lot of his passion after living through so much by himself
And I agree completely on X changing so drastically because Zero left oh man
It’s just like I said in one of my earlier giant essays about megaman, X needed Zero’s void to combat his limitless potential. X’s potential was capable of going in any direction, and Zero made sure to help keep him on the right track. He definitely had a good reason to seal himself away, although he went about it in a pretty terrible way, but X really did need him.
Just like Zero needed X to keep him stable and give him something to believe in. He always knew he could trust X and believed so much in him that he was completely confident in leaving the safety of the world in his hands. And while that shows just how strongly he felt about X, that’s also kind of
terrible
like Zero honey your friend is a person, he can’t handle all of that by himself
And having to destroy him after he became the Big Bad would have really harshly opened his eyes to that
maybe even made him feel a little responsible
like he would remember their promise and would primarily be defeating X because he asked him to, but in the back of his mind he would know that this happened to him in the first place because he left
and like what happened in canon was a more gentle version of that
While it’s still kind of his fault that X is the way he is now, Zero isn’t given physical retribution for it. He still realizes that X is not what he used to be and agrees to take his place, but it doesn’t hit him quite as hard as having to end his life by his own hand would. It’s more bittersweet and they part on good terms. At least until Zero gets himself killed and then they float around in dead robot cyber land until ZX huhuehehuehueheuheuh
wow these two are emotionally exhausting I have teared up at least twice while writing this
SAD ABOUT ROBOTS: THE BLOG: THE LIFE
Oh my goodness you replied. Someone actually replied to me. And you added more of your thoughts. Ahh you have no idea how excited this made me.
I really get what you mean about Zero keeping X’s potential in check. Those tests Dr. Light ran on X were great and all, and really smart thinking on Dr. Light’s part, but nothing’s foolproof. Can you imagine what X’s life would have been like without Zero? Not even looking at how many times X would have died if Zero hadn’t been there so save him, but just everything else Zero did for him. Being a mentor for X when he was still new to the Maverick Hunters and couldn’t bring himself to fight. Giving X support when his friends went Maverick, or when X questioned himself. Even just offering a simple goal when everything else was going nuts, like at the end of X8 (oh man I love that cutscene). Without Zero, X’s potential never would have become a danger, because X probably wouldn’t have made it past the first game.
Even with Zero to guide him, it’s still shocking to think of just how powerful X was by the end of his life. Not even raw power like his armors, but in the sense that by just having X’s name and face, Copy X was able to turn a utopia into an evil dictatorship, which was responsible for countless reploid deaths, and all within the time span of a few years. Not that I really consider Copy X a villain. The things he was doing were evil, yes, and he had to be stopped, but those were the only similarities between him and the original Megaman Zero ending. Where X lost sight of himself and gradually would have spiraled into senseless killing, with Copy X it was less a spiral and more a plummet. And I can’t really blame him. He was a brand-new reploid with X’s name and face, yet none of X’s abilities or potential, and he was immediately thrust into the position of ‘most powerful leader in the world’ and expected to keep everything running like clockwork. Even if he had been a perfect copy of X (which we all know is impossible, just look at Dr. Cain and reploids), he still wouldn’t have been able to fill X’s dash-boots, because X had a century of experience and knowledge to help him. I’ve always kind of felt sorry for Copy X. He wasn’t evil, just a naive reploid who had too much expected of him.
Still, it begs the question: who would have been worse for the world, X or Copy X? Copy X was significantly less powerful than X, but he had no common sense, justice, intelligence, or the maturity to see what he was doing was wrong, or to ask for help. X would have been insanely powerful, and just that much more difficult to take down, but he was still X, and I think if it was Zero who confronted him, he might have listened to reason. Or at least taken a step back and seen that he needed help. I guess it comes down to blind evil, or misguided evil.
Man, I’m almost wishing they’d make a second Zero series now, just so we could see how X going corrupt would have played out. Almost. I’m still glad the Zero series took the route it did, because I’m not sure I would have been able to bear killing X. Poor X. He tried so hard, but the world was just like, “Nope! No Elysium and happy ending for you! You get to watch all you friends go evil and die. And then die yourself. And then watch everything you’ve ever worked for be destroyed. And then watch your own body be destroyed. And then die again.” Some days I just want to hug the poor little bugger.
OH WOW LOOK ANOTHER ESSAY. I didn’t mean for this to happen, but I am just so happy to have someone who talked to me about Megaman. Most of my friends tune me out when I go off on one of my headcannon rants. Please never be shy to talk to me about Megaman. I want to know that I’m not alone in obsessing too deeply about these things. You are a great person and you have a very good blog. I always get excited when one of your Megaman posts shows up on my dash, because you have very good and thoughtful opinions about things.
AAAND I sound like a stalker again.
(wow this post is getting long. Sorry nothing’s under a ‘read more’ or anything like that, but I am new to Tumblr and don’t know how to do that fancy stuff yet)
there is no way I wouldn’t reply to this, your thoughts are really interesting and I really love being able to talk about this stuff at such a great length hahahasfdhjk
man I could swear there was a way to put reblogged comments under a readmore, hang on
